Holocaust Poster Series (2019)

For my Graphic Design 1 class, we were asked to visit the New England Holocaust Memorial in Boston to get inspiration and to create a poster series for theInternational Holocaust Film Festival in Berlin. We started by creating proposals that represented various aspects of the memorial, and I digitized my pieces and put them into posters. For the color palette, I used warm earthy tones that offered a positive feeling without being too overbearing.

The first proposed poster was inspired by the incredible stories of individual survivors whose stories we will never hear and whose stories have been lost in history.

This poster depicts my interpretation of a ripple in water and a tree stump --at the same time-- because although the Holocaust was almost eight decades ago, the effects are still felt today; the memory will always be a part of our history, whether we like it or not.

The last poster I developed is an abstract pattern that reflects the six million lives lost represented by the six towers.

We began the project by creating hand done abstract art pieces that reflected the experience of moving through the memorial. I ended up taking pieces and general inspiration from these to create the posters.

In my first iterations, I felt that the studies did not represent the emotion of this tragedy. In my update, I added a key word, “remember”, and altered the typography to unify the posters and deepen a connection to the holocaust.
